Oxy-acetylene welding working principle /
Oxy-acetylene welding
process explained
Oxy-acetylene welding-
It is the gas welding
process in which the oxygen and acetylene gases are combined together in a
torch to produce a flame at a point of ignition and make a weld. This welding
process produces a temperature up to 3000 to 3480 degree Celsius. Because of the
very high temperature, this oxy-acetylene fuel mixture also used for the metal
cutting process.
The chemical reaction
between oxygen and acetylene is exothermic in nature.
The O2 and C2 H2 gases
will be drawn from their respective cylinder into the torch body and mixed them
together in the torch body. So that the mixture is possessing certain higher
pressure.
When this high-pressure
mixture is passing through the conversion nozzle, the pressure energy will be
converted into velocity or kinetic energy, and therefore mixture is coming out
from nozzle tip at very high velocity. If the initiating is given for the
burning of the mixture the continuous flame will be produced. So that the heat
available in the flame will be used for meeting and joining of the plates.
For complete combustion
of 1 unit volume of acetylene in total 2.5 units volume of oxygen is required.
Out of each 1 unit of volume of oxygen is obtained from the O2 cylinder and 1.5
units of volume of oxygen are obtained from atmospheric air. Out of the two, O2
taken from O2 cylinder can only be controllable. Due to this under practical
condition based on the amount of O2 consume from the O2 cylinder, the flame
produce will be divided into three types.
1] Neutral Flame
2] Carburizing Flame
3] Oxidizing Flame
By mistake, if the
welder interchanging hose pipe, both the host pipe will fail. To avoid the
interchangeability that distinguishes between cylinders like size, color, type
of threads etc. will be used.
To withstand pressure
as well as high temperature, the nozzle or torch is made by using tungsten
carbide as a material.
The angle made by the
axle of a torch with an axis of the work piece is called a Torch Angle.
Torch angle varied from
0° to 90°.
We will discuss about
Type of Flame and Welding Techniques in our next article.
